Abstract

This paper outlines the basic principles underlying the detection of optical and near optical frequency radiation. The treatment concentrates on non-imaging applications and seeks to identify the principal factors that dictate the performance potential of photodetectors and photodetection systems. This then leads to a short discussion of some recent results obtained in furthering the art of photodetector technology, which currently concentrates on enhancement of the sensitivity of near-infrared detectors especially for use in systems exploiting high-frequency modulation. It will be shown that performance approaching the theoretical limit is relatively straightforward to achieve.
